A Week with the Robins: Inside Our Youngest Class at Roseville Community School

Parents touring Roseville Community School often ask, “But what do the kids actually do all day?” The best answer is to show you. So here’s a look at a recent week with the Robins, our youngest learners.

Morning: math that moves

The Robins have been counting by 5s lately. At this age, skip-counting isn’t a worksheet. It’s clapping, stepping, and chanting together until the pattern clicks. Small groups and a low adult-to-student ratio mean every child gets to try. No one hides in the back row, and no one gets left behind when the pattern gets tricky.

Language: words with a little mess involved

Reading and word work for young children should feel like play, so we make it play. This month the Robins went on a Halloween word hunt and played word games with slime. A child digging for letters in something squishy is building the same early reading skills as a child at a desk, and is having a lot more fun.

Wonder Workshop: hands-on discovery

In Wonder Workshop, the Robins carved pumpkins. It’s a classic fall activity, and it’s packed with learning. Kids predict how many seeds are inside, notice how the pumpkin looks and smells, measure, compare, and talk through what they see. The questions they ask matter as much as the answers.

Art Studio: polka-dot pumpkins

In Art Studio, the Robins made polka-dot pumpkins. Young artists practice fine motor control, pattern, and color, and they get to make choices about their own work. At RCS, art is about the process, not about making twenty identical projects for the fridge.

Nature Detectives: from garden to hand

The Robins harvested from our school garden this month. In Nature Detectives, kids learn by being outside: digging, observing, and seeing where food comes from. For many children, pulling something they helped grow out of the ground is the moment science becomes real.

Roots & Wings: growing as people

Our teacher opened one recent week with a note on kindness, and that theme carries through everything the Robins do. In Roots & Wings, children build social and emotional skills. They practice taking turns, working through frustration, and being a good friend. In a mixed-age, community-centered school, these skills get used every single day.

Out in the community

Learning doesn’t stop at the classroom door. The Robins have been practicing songs for Halloween caroling at a local senior community. For young children, singing for an audience builds confidence. It also teaches them that they can bring joy to others, which is one of the most important lessons we know.

What ties it all together

You may notice what’s missing from this week: long stretches of sitting still, piles of worksheets, and one-size-fits-all lessons. That’s on purpose. RCS is a progressive, parent-participation homeschool learning center for ages 5 to 12. We believe young children learn best through hands-on experiences, time outdoors, and real relationships with teachers, classmates, and the parents who help make our school run.

Each week, families get a newsletter from every class, so parents always know what their child is learning and can keep the conversation going at home.

Come see it for yourself

A week with the Robins is hard to capture in words. If you’re exploring homeschool options for your young learner, we’d love to show you around. Campus tours are offered Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings. Come watch a class, meet our teachers, and picture your child here.

A tip for your visit: RCS shares an address with Roseville Community Preschool. We’re located behind the preschool, across from the fairgrounds stables.
